Although you have to put this together once finished it does not look like a self assemble item it looks like a higher end piece of . Its very sturdy and solid. (Sea grass baskets from Target fit perfectly.
I was nervous about buying because a bulky piece of in my entryway sounded terrible. Surprisingly this thing is gorgeous and just what we needed. HOWEVER, during the first step of installation one of the holes were too big for the screw. This small problem, I felt, ruined the integrity of the piece but nonetheless it is a GREAT hall tree and the instructions were simple and to the point.
The unit is much sturdy than I imagined and it looks great in my entry way. The only downfall is the seat is not padded. Other than that Im very happy with the purchase.
