It looks great in my room and I also have 14 inches ...
I have owned this item for a little over a year now. It looks great in my room and I also have 14 inches of mattress combined on it, my regular 10 mattress with a beauty rest memory foam topper. It just makes the headboard look shorter which is no big deal. The reason I took one star away is because it seems as though the screws (Which are tightened via Allen key) seem to loosen themselves. Its rather strange and I just happened to notice the bottom of the bed slightly separated from the side and realized the screws were pretty loose. This has happened twice since, so keep your Allen key handy and check routinely to make sure they dont need tightened. All but one of the L brackets needed tightened each time. As for putting it together, I needed a second person. It took us about an hour.
EDIT UPDATE: 12/6/2020 - This bed is still going strong for me. I know have a tempurpedic mattress on it on a wooden base because the slats are 4.5 apart, its recommended that tempurpedic is put on slats no farther than 3 apart or else the warranty is voided. I still have to tighten the screws every few months and thats annoying to have to think about. If anyone has a solution for this PLEASE let me know lol.
