Its solid wood which is hard to find these days. All of it is wood. It is fairly easy to put together. It is bare wood but I like that because I can customize it anyways I want. If you want you can run some very fine sand paper on it to make it silky smooth but I dont think it necessarily needs it. We bought this frame along with the drawers that go underneath and I can tell this company has quality products
