2nd . Had a Windmachine but it died. I prefer the metal style as its easier to clean. Yes, it makes a loud hum on start up. It goes away. I dont even notice it running unless I pay attention. It keeps my apt cool so I can delay air conditioning for quite a while. It is a high velocity fan, not a box fan. I have it angled at the ceiling/wall so it circulates.
