Add height if you want the trundle to have a mattress 8 inches or thicker

When I was considering buying this bed for a guest room, I spent a LOT of time on finding a thick enough mattress to put on the trundle so an adult would be comfortable. Theres about 8 inches of clearance between the trundle and bed, limiting your options to mattresses that are about 7 inches thick and usually made for kids (who are lightweight!). I wanted to be able to sleep an adult guest on the trundle. However, reviews for 7/inch mattresses on indicate that adults arent comfortable sleeping on them. So I needed to lift the bed up a bit to create space. (Also note you shouldnt stuff a mattress in underneath because you need a bit of space for airflow between the two mattresses; otherwise you risk growing mold.) Also good to know: the bed doesnt have feet that make it easy to lift with any kind of riser. And if you want to add more support for the mattress (because the slats are spaced widely more than 3 inches apart), you will need to factor that in. I did not add support for my mattresses. Heres what I did: 1. Purchased an 8/inch mattress (Nod by Tuft Needle, 8/inch Twin, ) for the trundle. Without lifting the bed, the mattress was stuffed tightly underneath. 2. Placed multiple rubber furniture risers under the four corners of the bed to lift it 1/2 inches (2 half/inch thick brown ones, plus 1 hard slider). See photos of the risers and the clearance it gives the mattress (note no sheet on the mattress in the clearance photo ?the gray cover comes with the Nod). Carpet makes it harder for the risers to work. The rest of the items I bought are: ?Casper 12/inch Twin mattress (The Casper Mattress) for the upper mattress ?ole Flannel Fleece Luxury Throw Blanket ?INGALIK Premium Bed Sheet Set 3 Piece 120 GSM Brushed Microfiber, 1800 Series Hotel Luxury Bedding Sheets ?Multiple kinds of pillows to give my guests options for firmness Theres another review with photos where someone added metal supports to lift the bed 4/6 inches so they could fit some thick mattresses they already have. I think this is a great idea! However, I didnt have the tools or energy to do this. Overall I think this bed is fine and both mattresses feel pretty good. I wouldnt have a heavy person sleep on the trundle. If I were doing it over again, I might spend more time loo for a daybed with more height, but I ran out of time.
