I ordered these for my kitchen, and from the photos it look as though the. seat is smooth but it has deep grooves because it's either planked, or made to look that way. I definitely would have preferred smooth, but it didn't bother me enough to send them back. They seem sturdy, but they don't spin easily. Also not a problem for our needs.
