GOOD THINGS DO COME IN THREES! ~~ EVERYTHING I WANTED AT A GREAT PRICE
S 3-piece luggage set is just what I needed in luggage replacement. I stumbled on this set at the right time prior to a major move. I wanted more luggage for 2 reasons: I needed a new, full set (explained below) and these pieces would make it easier to pack my clothes for the move, in addition to all the other clothes packing supplies Id already bought. I figured it was finally time to invest in hard side suitcases anyway, after the fiasco that I went through at a small city airport. Let me explain...
I have a very expensive 3 piece set of soft-sided luggage thats beautiful and tough, like tapestry and canvas combine, but also perfectly designed. The pieces were gorgeously made, all fit together for easy rolling (the only drawback being bi-directional, not spinner, wheels). The only complaint or issue that I ever had was the empty weight of the suitcases, which limited what I could pack without going over airline weight limits. I had flown back and forth across the country with this luggage set for 10 years without a single incident. No marks, scuffs, scratches, broken wheels or damage of any kind. Nothing. On my last trip, I forgot the keys to my TSA lock at home, and arrived at the destination airport in the middle of the night. I asked the man in charge to use their TSA key to unlock the suitcase before I drove 150 miles to my eventual destination. Instead, he broke off the suitcase zipper to remove the lock because he couldnt find the TSA key! That beautiful suitcase was made useless as the zipper cannot be repaired. At least, the pricey set was worth it in the long run, but I was livid at the loss and didnt want to invest that much in a new set. Then this set came along, and would hopefully fit my immediate needs for ground travel, and perhaps be worthy for air travel as well.
My expectations were low, but the impression this set made was high.
Very well packaged. All 3 pieces store inside each other in their own sturdy box, and shipped it very well in an even sturdier shipping box. Zero damage of any kind. And it was a new, not a returned set of luggage, so that was win-win. A+
Each piece is protectively wrapped in plastic bags or bubble wrap bag.
Semi-shiny, rough-textured ABS material -- not rock hard and a bit bendy only when pushed in the center of the sides, but the edges and corners are hard. I dropped a suitcase while unpacking and it hit the hardwood floor VERY HARD without any dents, scratches, or damage. I do believe that material will resist showing scratches at the very least.
Rubberized side and top handles along with a telescope handle.
NO EXTERIOR PLASTIC ODOR. The lining is good, but not a quality polyester. A little on the stiffer side and has a slight chemical smell that might affect clothes, so that needs fixing. Non-adjustable, elasticized straps with plastic clasp for one side of the suitcase, and a net/polyester flap divider that zips closed all the way around on the other side of the suitcase. Clothes should be adequately held in place with both of those features. There no other side, or zippered pockets.
Smooth operating zipper with 2 metal tabs for closure with inset TSA lock, or a separate lock. Customized 3 digit code. Expandable luggage space with second zipper and a single metal tab. Shiny rubber flap partially protects zipper, but this will probably show scratches from baggage handling. NOTE: SMALLEST BAG IS NOT EXPANDABLE.
Four double wheels with plastic connector between and metal centers on the outside of the wheels. I thought they would be single wheels. Not sure if the wheels will hold up. Many brands do not. The wheels inserts into the luggage are plastic and not all in one piece, so the wheels seem potentially vulnerable to damage. My previous luggage wheels are recessed and very durable. Never had any issues with them. But the stem-attached and double wheel construction of this set COULD BE an issue with rough baggage handling. After all, they stick out and spin.
EXTREMELY LIGHTWEIGHT. All 3 pieces together feel like only 10 pounds. I believe the weights are overstated in the description.
The telescope handles extend and lock in place very easily. The length of the handles gets shorter as the suitcases get larger. I could easily attach the small suitcase on top of the middle suitcase with a bungee cord [see my photos] for easy rolling, but not attach either one to the large suitcase because the telescope handle is too short. Bear that in mind. Youll need to maneuver at least 2 suitcases separately at a time if you take all 3 on a trip and are by yourself. FYI: My expensive soft luggage mentioned above had straps to fit both suitcases front to back and the large tote had a sleeve in the back that slipped over the telescope handles for all in one operation. That convenience is absent with this set.
Im not mentioning the inset lock because I intend to use regular TSA locks. Its a personal thing for me because locks can malfunction and I dont want to cut my way into the luggage.
The set is everything important that I was looking for at an affordable price, and they hold quite a bit.
WHAT I LIKE: The convenient sizes, functionality, fits-all-in-one storage, less likelihood of scratches or damage being visible. Nice appearance, and flexibility of use.
POSSIBLE DOWNSIDES: Vulnerability and durability of the wheels for air travel. The centers of the suitcases are bendy while the edges sides are hard. Not sure how much impact they can withstand either way. Time will tell. That was not an issue with my soft high-denier fabric suitcases.
All in all, any serious concerns about this luggage are the same ones there are with any brand or style of hard side luggage, which is not indestructible, even the most expensive ones. So, bear in mind that what you gain and lose with such luggage is a tradeoff that Im willing to make. I noticed after ordering that the description mentions clearance. I hope not because I recommend the set with some realistic considerations, but am very happy with it so far. Looks good and does what I need it to do, and I still have 2 matching pieces of my other set!
